In the 1940s, the German economist Wilhelm Röpke devoted a series of writings to the crisis of Europe. He foreshadowed a dark scenario characterized by the fall of the Western civilization and its moral and social references. Röpke denounced a process of degeneration associated to different forms of collectivism, able to replace the market economy and produce an authoritarian turn of the political system.
