Comparative assemblages of freshwater Macroinvertebrate at different canopy covers in Pelagus Area, Kapit Division

Freshwater ecosystems provide habitats for many biological diversity of which macroinvertebrates constitute substantially in term of richness and abundance. Therefore, quantifying the assemblages ofmacroinvertebrates in streams and rivers will give insight the quality of the ecosystem. Land use always associated with changes in canopy cover of the stream which also affect other environmental variables and eventually the diversity and composition of macroinvertebrates. However, assemblages of macroinvertebrates in relation to different magnitudes of canopy cover remains unclear, particularly in logged-forest stream. This study determines the structure of macroinvertebrate assemblages at different percentage of canopy cover in logged-over forest streams of Pelagus area. This study indicated that macroinvertebrates assemblages were rich in shaded canopy (548 individuals and 34 taxa) than open canopy (209 individuals from 22 taxa). The abundance of most macroinvertebrate taxa was also greater in shaded site, but the difference is not significant. Baetis sp. from order Ephemeroptera was the most abundant in both open and shaded canopy
