Teaching activities have not always been assigned the same importance as an author’s published works. However, the courses taught by an author and their syllabuses may provide new insights into that author’s ideas, as teaching is part of one’s intellectual work and development. This paper outlines some characteristics of an unpublished Communication Theory course taught by Vilém Flusser at the University of Marseille, in 1977. Grounded on documentary research, it aims to understand what is communication theory, which are the concepts to which that label is applied and what is the place of communication theory in a university course.
