Avalanches and Avalanche Defence: Translations of Seventeen Russian Articles

The information contained in these translations consists of seventeen papers presented at the first all-union conference on avalanches, in Leningrad in 1965. Papers are presented on the physical properties of snow and how they may be determined, how to locate an unstable snow layer, equations to calculate the equilibrium of snow masses, equations to describe the motion of avalanches, predictions of avalanches, use of aerial photographs for mapping avalanches, use of terrestrial stereophotogrammetry for estimating avalanche hazard, and the study of snow motion by the same technique, avalanche defences for industrial sites, slow creep of snow on slopes, artificial dusting of snow in avalanche accumulation areas, elimination of avalanche dangers and finally an automatic device for estimating the depth of snow remotely.
