Expressions for first and second-order flanking paths are derived using the framework and assumptions of Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA). The resulting expression can be rewritten in terms of the sound reduction index (SRI) for resonant transmission through the structural flanking elements and it is shown that consideration must be given to the presence of a non-resonant component in measured SRI. Failure to do so will underestimate the SRI of the flanking paths. The SEA expression for first-order flankingpaths is shown to be identical to the expression appearing in EN12354 Part 1 for airborne sound insulation, even though EN12354 was not derived using SEA.
