The N[2] BET surface area (SA) of bottle hydrated portland cement is greatly reduced if exposed to changing relative humidities. The maximum SA loss, from 83 m[2]/g, occurred on exposure to between 40 and 60% RH. In addition, the number and rate of humidity changes appear to affect the value of the SA, which increases only when exposed to relative humidities in excess of 75%. The phenomenon cannot be explained by the usual causes of aging of high specific SA solids. It is proposed that the solid, deformed by non- uniform moisture distribution during changing humidity conditions, breaks and makes interparticle bonds. A unique feature of cement paste is that these bonds can easily form and remain intact even after the moisture gradient vanish...
