A review is presented of the observations made by the Snow and Ice Section of the Division of Building Research, National Research Council , Canada, on the exchange of heat and moisture between the atmosphere and snow, water and soil surfaces, and on the ground thermal regime and the influence of surface characteristics on that regime.
