A number of fire ventilation scenarios were investigated to identify the proper ventilation scheme for conducting design fire tests in a 4.2 m long, 3.8 m wide, and 2.4 m high compartment. The work was part of the process of designing fire experiments for fires in various rooms in low-rise residential dwellings of light-frame construction to assess the ignition, growth, fully-developed, and decay stages of fire in relation to ventilation rate. The ventilation schemes were provided by using different sizes of windows, doors, or both. The fuel package used, a mock-up sofa with two wood cribs below, was based on the statistical evidence that many fatal residential fires begin with an item of upholstered furniture.
