The effective management of failure risk in large buried pipes requires inspection and monitoring, whereby distress indicators are observed, recorded, and subsequently interpreted into condition rating(s). The type, extent and location of observed distress indicators in a buried pipe are dependent on the pipe material and its surrounding environment.
