This paper describes the development of a procedure that uses laser scanning to assess external pitting corrosion of ductile iron pipe. The statistical model for the procedure was established by identifying and characterizing corroded areas from scanned laser range images. Pipe investigation is done by using a scanner equipped with a laser displacement sensor that generates an accurate topographic mapping of the outer surface of the pipe. The scanning speed can be increased by reducing the resolution and using interpolation later to increase the resolution.
