Air movement caused by stack action can be an important means by which smoke spreads from floor to floor. With a fire in a lower floor, smoke spreads from the fire floor to upper floors mainly through vertical shafts. This paper examines the control of shaft pressures by natural venting to prevent smoke entering a shaft or if it does, to provide for its being exhausted to outside. Top venting increases smoke contamination of the shaft; bottom venting inhibits the flow of smoke into the shaft from contaminated floors. Factors affecting optimum vent sizes for both top and bottom venting of shafts are examined. Top venting can assist in the evacuation of smoke originating from fire in a shaft.
