The avalanche research program of the National Research Council of Canada began with investigations in the late 1950' s for the route of the Trans-Canada Highway through the Rogers Pass region of British Columbia. Population densities are low in the mountains of Western Canada, making it possible to apply avalanche defence methods in the lower or run-out zones of avalanche sites. The objective of the NRCC program has been to establish the avalanche hazard evaluation methods, the characteristics of avalanche sites and the properties of avalanches that are required in planning, constructing and operating these defence systems.
