New materials and construction methods introduced in the post-WW II period brought about a need to evaluate the structural sufficiency of wood-frame houses by tests. The paper describes a full-scale loading test on a 24x36 ft. bungalow carried out by the Division of Building Research of the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa. Simulated wind and snow loads were applied to the roof and walls by hydraulic jacks reacting against a steel frame built around the house. Loading sequences and instrumentation developed to measure the deflection of the house frame under load are described. The results showed that the house was well capable of withstanding the specified wind load multiplied with a load factor of 1.8, but that the roof in its...
