The effectiveness of dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethylformamide, N-methyl pyrrolidone, and pyridine in swelling yellow birch, beech, white pine, and Douglas-fir was determined. Changes in the radial and tangential dimensions during simple immersion were followed until maximum swelling was obtained.
