To study the performance of concrete slabs placed directly on the ground as foundation units for small structures, the Division of Building Research constructed two slabs in Ottawa and one in Winnipeg. These two locations represent wide variations in soil and climate conditions. In both locations the slabs were constructed on clay subsoils with well-known swelling and shrinking characteristics.
