The guarded hot-plate apparatus is the primary standard for the measurement of thermal conductivities of thermally insulating materials. Standard test procedures using the guarded hot plate are prescribed by ASTM and ISO. In principle, the values of thermal conductivities determined using a well-designed apparatus could be accurate to between 0.5% and 1%. But experience shows that the design, construction and operation of a guarded hot plate apparatus are very challenging tasks and it is not always possible to attain the highest theoretical accuracy.
