Permafrost investigations in Canada

A knowledge of permafrost distribution is of vital concern to the practising engineer and geologist. The Division of Building Research is engaged in mapping permafrost in Canada on the basis of continuous and discontinuous zones. The information obtained to date has been compiled mainly from direct field observations and the mapping of permafrost by such methods is a long-term project. Recently the Division has initiated a study of climatic and terrain factors affecting the existence of permafrost in specific locations as a means of improving the ability to predict permafrost conditions. The basic energy factors affecting permafrost distribution cannot be measured with sufficient accuracy to determine the thermal condition causing permafrost which is the integrated effect of climatic and terrain factors over a long period. The objective of this study, therefore, is to investigate the thermal characteristics of the terrain components and to seek correlations between these, the climatic factors, and the distribution of perennially frozen ground.Une certaine connaissance de la r\ue9partition du perg\ue9lisol est indispensable \ue0 l'ing\ue9nieur et au g\ue9ologue. La Division des recherches en b\ue2timent est en train de dresser la carte des perg\ue9lisols du Canada, en prenant pour base l'existence de zones continues et discontinues. Les renseignements obtenus jusqu'ici r\ue9sultent d'une compilation entreprise principalement \ue0 partir d'observations effectu\ue9es sur le terrain. Or, la cartographie du perg\ue9lisol par de telles m\ue9 thodes est un projet de longue haleine. La Division \ue9tudie, depuis peu, l'influence du climat et celle du relief sur l' existence du perg\ue9lisol dans certaines r\ue9gions, car ces facteurs pourraient offrir un moyen d'am\ue9liorer les pr\ue9 visions dans ce domaine. Les facteurs \ue9nerg\ue9tiques essentiels qui influent sur la distribution du perg\ue9lisol ne peuvent \ueatre mesur\ue9s avec assez de pr\ue9cision pour d\ue9terminer les conditions thermiques \ue0 l'origine de ce ph\ue9nom\ue8ne. La formation du perg\ue9lisol combine en effet, sur une longue p\ue9 riode, l'influence des facteurs li\ue9s au climat et au relief. Cette \ue9tude vise donc \ue0 \ue9tablir les caract\ue9 ristiques thermiques des \ue9l\ue9ments du relief, et \ue0 d\ue9gager des corr\ue9lations entre, d'une part, ces caract\ue9ristiques et les facteurs climatiques, et, d'autre part, la r\ue9partition des terres \ue9ternellement gel\ue9es.Peer reviewed: NoNRC publication: Ye
