The hunting of wild animals in the 20th century for the international skin trade was responsible for the collapse of several populations of Amazon mammals and reptiles. However, the impacts of this activity varied between the exploited species, locally and regionally, according to the intensity of hunting and resilience of the species. Some twenty years after the ban of the fur trade in Brazil, giant otters, the species most affected by this international trade, began to show signs of population recovery.
