Die Nutzung institutioneller Ethnografie und Klippen der Feldforschung: Praxisstrategien

Discussion and analysis of characteristics and tensions associated with fieldwork in two projects using institutional ethnography is the focus of this article. Examined in comparison with each other, the first exemplar explores the organization of the Canadian immigration system and the mandatory medical screening for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) of immigrants within this. The second exemplar looks at how nurses' work in a selection of Canadian hospitals is organized. The argument made is that the politics of deliberately maintaining a standpoint on the side of a set of people (immigrants with HIV and nurses)—where inquiry begins from the experiential knowledge and concerns with the world of these constituents—gives rise to challenges to which the researcher must contend and adapt. Mobilizing examples from our fieldwork, we explore several such challenges and explain the research decisions we made in the face of these. Examinados en comparación, el primer ejemplo explora la organización del sistema de inmigración canadiense y la obligatoria revisión médica para el virus de inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH) de imigrantes en éste. El segundo ejemplo observa cómo las enfermeras trabajan en una selección de hospitales canadienses. El argumento es que las politicas de mantener deliberadamente un punto de vista del lado de un conjunto de personas (imigrantes con VIH y enfermeras) – donde la investigacion empieza desde el conocimiento experiencial y las preocupaciones con el mundo de estos constituyentes – dan pie a desafios que el investigador debe enfrentar y adaptar. Mostrando ejemplos de nuestro trabajo de campo, exploramos tales desafios y explicamos las decisiones de investigacion que fueron tomadas para enfrentarlos. Das erste Projekt befasste sich mit der Organisation des kanadischen Einwanderungssystems und den obligatorischen HIV-Tests für Immigrant/innen, das zweite untersuchte die Arbeit von Pflegekräften in ausgewählten kanadischen Krankenhäusern. Wir behaupten, dass mit der bewussten Übernahme eines Standpunktes aufseiten einer spezifischen Gruppe (Immigrant/innen mit HIV bzw. Pflegekräften) – d.h., wenn Forschung von deren Erfahrungswissen und Verortung in der jeweiligen Lebenswelt ausgeht – Herausforderungen einhergehen, mit denen Forschende sich befassen und die sie bearbeiten müssen. Ausgehend von Beispielen aus unserer Feldforschung untersuchen wir solche Herausforderungen und begründen, wie wir angesichts der Probleme, vor denen wir standen, zu Forschungsentscheidungen gekommen sind.
