At the beginning of this survey concerning provenance research in the Vienna City Library there is a brief discussion of the consequences of the »Anschluss« 1938 for the institution and the acquisition policy during the Nazi era. Furthermore the different ways of how questionable acquisitions found their way to the library by means of confiscations, expropriations, sales under pressure or as abandoned property of murdered previous owners after the war are described. In 1999 the City of Vienna committed itself to giving back those objects of art or of cultural interest in its holdings that belonged to victims of the Nazi era to the former owners or their heirs.
