What is the task of the reader who is immersed in the act of reading? The importance of understanding this task has been recognized and given increased emphasis in recent years. For those engaged in the preparation of reading teachers, it has become apparent that they must help these future teachers to see that their choice of materials and teaching procedures should stem from an understanding of the task faced by the reader.
