In order to mitigate the adverse impacts caused by climate change, governments around the world have set ambitious targets to reduce the carbon intensity of their country. Achieving those emission reduction targets necessitates the active participation of the construction industry as the manufacturing of construction materials could contribute to 70 percent of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions at the construction stage or 15 percent of a building’s life time energy consumption. Minimizing the GHGs generated from the construction industry through prudent selection of “low carbon” construction materials is, therefore, imperative.
