Dissertação de mestrado em Genética MolecularCisplatin is a highly effective chemotherapeutic drug used in the treatment of several cancers, such as testicular, ovarian, cervical, head and neck and small-cell lung cancer. It is a DNA-damaging agent that induces apoptosis of rapidly proliferating cells, an important factor underlying its therapeutic efficacy. Unfortunately, despite high cure rates, its curative potential is often impaired when cells develop drug resistance. Multiple factors may contribute to the development of drug resistance, i.e., enhanced efflux, oncogene overexpression and defects in apoptosis pathways, and this problem has yet to be overcome.
