Palmitate accumulation in continuous bioreactors fed with oleate appears to be the cause for frequent reports of process failure during the anaerobic treatment of lipids or LCFA-rich wastewaters. In these reactors, oleate can be converted to palmitate by microorganisms other than syntrophic bacteria (facultative anaerobic bacteria), and do not depend on the presence of active hydrogenotrophic methanogens. To study non-syntrophic oleate conversion to palmitate, methanogens were selectively eliminated by applying low hydraulic retention time in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) fed with oleate.
