Oral Health Impact on Daily Life Questionnaire (OHIDL): Psychometric Properties

Session 316: Psychometric Properties and Methodological Considerations in Quality-of-Life Research [Educator Track]Oral PresentationObjectives: OHIDL was developed to measure Hong Kong older adults’ perception on oral health impacts on daily life. This study aimed to examine the factor structure, validity and reliability of OHIDL. Methods: Older adults aged 55 years or above who attended dental clinics run by non-governmental organizations (NGO) in Hong Kong for general dental treatments were recruited. Subjects were asked to complete the OHIDL in Chinese by rating the intensity level of each of the 20 impact items in a 5-point Likert scale (0=none to 4=very severe) through face-to-face interviews. Factor structure of OHIDL was verified using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The reliability (internal consistency) of OHIDL was assessed by Cronbach’s α coefficient and the construct validity of OHIDL was assessed by investigating the Spearman’s rho correlation (rs) between the intensity score (sum of the impact item scores) and the global ratings of oral health and oral health impacts. Results: A total of 280 subjects (mean age: 69.9 years; SD: 8.3) completed the interviews. Two items with low item-total correlation (<0.4) were eliminated. A five-factor model with the best goodness-of-fit in CFA was selected. The five domains were: Eating function, Speaking and appearance, Psychological, Social and Overall health. The Cronbach’s α coefficients of the five domains ranged from 0.651 (Overall health) to 0.854 (Eating function) and was 0.897 in the full scale. The five domains and overall intensity scores changed significantly with the global ratings. Higher intensity scores were associated with poorer rating of oral health (rs: -0.277 to -0.551, p<0.01), lower satisfaction with oral health status (rs: -0.347 to -0.619, p<0.01) and greater overall oral health impacts on daily life (rs: 0.359-0.706, p
