A series of luminescent ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes with organoplatinum(II) moieties, together with their chloro precursors and palladium(II) dichloro analogues, [Ru-(bpy)2(BL)MX2]2+ (BL = 2,3-dpp, M = Pd, X = Cl (1); M = Pt, X = Cl (2), Cl and CH3 (3), CH3 (4), C6H5 (5), C6H4-OCH3-p (6), C6H4-F-p (7); BL = bpm, M = Pd, X = Cl (8); M = Pt, X = Cl (9), Cl and CH3 (10), C6H5 (11), C6H4-CH3-0 (12), C6H4-OCH3-p (13), C6H4-F-p (14); BL = 2,3-dpq, M = Pt, R = C6H4-OCH3-P (15)) have been synthesized and their electrochemical and photophysical properties studied; their reactivities toward the oxidative addition of methyl iodide have been investigated.
