This paper describes the development of an expert system in a computer- aided control system package called SFPACK. SFPACK has evolved from the MATLAB-derived control environment to a new generation of control system design environment because of the novel knowledge environment developed within the package. Expert systems can be developed within SFPACK and it provides an integrated environment for numeric and symbolic processing. An implementation of an expert system based on the classical frequency response design method will be described.
