We showed that cross-gain modulation is dominant over another kind of common signal quality degradation, namely four-wave mixing, in a two-pump fiber optical parametric amplifier (OPA) WDM system. We also demonstrated experimentally that the signal quality degradation can be improved significantly by a two-orthogonal-pump OPA (2OP-OPA) over the conventional two-parallel-pump OPA (2PP-OPA). © 2006 Elsevier B.V.
