A semi-analytical finite element method, which is also known as the finite layer method, is presented for determining the stresses and displacements in elastic multi-layered systems under arbitrary loadings. The method enables a full three-dimensional problem to be solved in a way similar to that of a one-dimensional problem, and as a result computer storage requirements and data input can be reduced drastically. A family of layer elements is developed and their accuracy compared with analytical solutions for a number of example problems. Refs
