Helicobacter pylori was first isolated in 1982 and has since been recognized as a major cause of gastric inflammation and ulceration, as well as gastric cancer. Its ability to survive the extremely hostile environment offered by the stomach has been instrumental in its success as a pathogen. One-week triple therapy is currently used to eradicate the organisms, but there are several side effects associated with the treatment. Probiotic organisms produce several antimicrobial substances and have shown inhibitory activity towards this pathogen. Clinical trials though consistent with the in vitro data have proven unsuccessful in complete eradication of H. pylori from patients.
