Chōyō Sakka, or what can be called as “conscripted writer”, was part of Japan’s Propaganda Division who was sent to various regions in Asia to spread Japanese war ideologies, such as Hakkō Ichiu, and the concept of Dai Tōa Kyōeiken at the time of the Pacific War. Takeda Rintarō was one of the writers who were stationed in Indonesia at the time. He was mainly active in Jawa and also spent some time visiting Bali. Takeda wrote various articles on his time in Indonesia and published a book called “Jawa Sarasa” on his return, which talked about his experience and thought on Indonesia. The purpose of this research is to use Postcolonial theory, especially Said’s Orientalism, as the basis to analyze how Takeda view Indonesia in his essays. It wa...
