Inhibitor of DNA binding (Id) proteins bind to and inhibit the function of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors including those that regulate retinal development. However, little is known about the role of Id proteins in the growth and differentiation of the retina during development. The purpose of this study is to observe the expression of Id proteins in the developing and adult mouse retinas as the first step in investigating the functions of Id family members in the eye. The expression of Id1-4 was examined by real-time PCR, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry in wild-type and Id1/Id3 double-knockout mice.
