The molecular mechanisms ensuring accurate chromosome segregation during meiosis and mitosis are critical to the conservation of euploidy (normal chromosome number) in eukaryotic cells. A dysfunctional kinetochore represents one possible source for chromosome instability (CIN) and the generation of aneuploidy.
