This paper presents an evaluation of the chaotic carrier frequency modulation scheme on the spectral characteristics of power converters. By incorporating a Chua's circuit into the feedback network, the converter time-domain and spectral behaviors at the equilibrium point, limit-cycle region and chaotic region are investigated. Input power spectral density and conducted electromagnetic interference of three basic dc/dc converters including buck, boost, and buck-boost converters are studied. By controlling the degree of chaos, the gradual transition of the spectral characteristics from periodic frequency modulation scheme to near random frequency modulation scheme is illustrated. The validity of the theoretical prediction is confirmed experi...
