The present study aims to investigate the significance of serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in relation to clinicopathological features of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients undergoing hepatic resection, and to investigate the potential interaction between BDNF and platelets in tumor development in a rat HCC model. Localization of BDNF expression in tissues was performed by immunohistochemistry. Serum levels of BDNF were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In the rat HCC model, serum samples were also serially collected during tumor development to measure BDNF levels.
