This research pioneers the study of the role of thinking styles in psychosocial development. Two hundred and forty-five (54 male and 191 female, averaged 21 years) Chinese students responded to the Thinking Styles Inventory (Sternberg & Wagner, 1992) and the Developing Purposes Inventory (Barratt & Hood, 1997). Results indicated that thinking styles predicted students' sense of purposefulness, an important dimension of psychosocial development. This study suggests that theories of intellectual styles should be integrated into the traditional family of theories of student development and that they should be practiced by student development personnel as well as by the teaching faculty.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
