In this paper, the design of non-flexural components using strut and tie models (STM) is presented. The proposed design procedure of STM is compliant with the British Standards. Two examples related to deep beam and dapped-end beam are given to illustrate the design principles of STM. The same beams are redesigned and detailed by using the conventional flexural theory and local detailing practices. The drawbacks of using the conventional approach for the design of non-flexural components are highlighted.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
