The aim of this study was to investigate the salivary immunoglobulin A concentration in rapid and slow plaque formers. After 3 days of oral hygiene abstinence, 49 healthy volunteers were screened using the plaque index (PI) to assess their plaque formation rates. Five subjects with the highest, and five with the lowest mean PI were selected as rapid and slow plaque formers, respectively. Unstimulated whole saliva was collected from each of these ten subjects and the levels of salivary IgA assessed using a conventional ELISA technique.
