A study was conducted to investigate the triplet state properties of Ir(ppy-NPh2)3 in comparison to those of Ir(ppy) 3 and demonstrate their technological potential for oxygen sensing. The emission spectra of Ir(ppy-NPh2)3 and Ir(ppy) 3 were compared. The slightly more structured spectra and longer decay times for Ir(ppy-NPh2)3 indicated a smaller metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) character of the emitting triplet state of the substituted complex as compared with Ir(ppy)3. It was observed that the photoluminescence quantum efficiency φPL was significantly high finding applications in OLEDs and sensors.
