Statistical studies on the inheritance of heat tolerance in dairy cows : III. Heritability estimates for body reactions to the air temperature of summer in Kyushu

This work was planned to estimate the heritabilities for the responses of body temperature and respiration rate in dairy cows to the high summer environmental temperature in Kyushu. The data used were individual records of body temperatures and respiration rates measured by the authors themselves, during August 1961, on 232 milking cows sired by 7 different bulls. The mean body temperature was 39.28℃ and the mean respiration rate was 59.0, while the mean air temperature was 30.3℃. Both of heritability estimates for the two responses, based on the paternal half sib correlation method, were statistically insignificant. The authors considered that the results may be attributed to large environmental variabilities caused by different feeding-management practices and other micro climatic conditions than the air temperature in every separate barns of the regional farmers, in contrasts with little existing genotypic difference among the two responses of the bulls used.暑熱に対する乳牛の生理的反応がどのように遺伝するかという問題については,反応の程度が低く,したがつて耐暑性が強いと考えられるZebu種と,反応の程度が高く,したがつて耐暑性が弱いと考えられる改良種との交雑による検討が,Lecky(1950),Fohrmanetal.(1951),U.S.D.A.(1952),McDowelleta1.(1953),Khishin and El-lssawi(1954)などによって展開され,これらのF_1はほぼ両原種の中間にあることが認められ,熱帯地方における乳牛の育種に貴重な資料を提供したが,改良種についてヘリタビリチーを評価した例はきわめて少なく,著者らの知るかぎりではSeath(1947)の例があるだけのようである.この点に着目した岡本ら(1958)は,さきに体温反応および呼吸数反応に関するヘリタビリチーとレピータビリチーの評価を計画し,主として鹿児島県下の乳牛群についてこれを実施したことがあるが,このばあい種雄牛を中心とする父系半姉妹群が,環境条件に差のある別個の地域に集団をなす傾向があつて,いずれも0.5～0.8と不当に高く評価された感があつた.今回はこの点を反省し,相当数の父系半姉妹群が同一地域に交錯して飼養されている,福岡県行橋市を中心とする酪農地帯を調査の対象に選定し,夏季の高気温に対する体温反応および呼吸数反応のヘリタビリチーの再評価を計画した.もつともこの地帯でも乳牛飼養農家はかなり散在している関係から,得られた標本数は十分ではなかったが、一応の成果はあったと思われるので,ここにその概要を報告する
