Vanadium-phosphorus mixed oxide catalysts (V-P-O) having P/V ratio of 2 have been investigated for the synthesis of maleic anhydride (MA) from butane. The V-P70 catalyst consisted of amorphous phase and/or (VO) 2P4012 phase when the precursor VO (H2PO4)2 was calcined in the temperature range of 500-780℃. The V-P-O catalyst exhibited a good MA selectivity of 45-53 mol% in the butane oxidation at 470-500℃although butane conversion remained at a low level (<40mol%) because of the small specific surface area of the catalyst (1-2.5m2・g-1). The addition of metal cations modified the catalytic properties of amorphous V-P-O catalyst. Particularly, the MA yield was enhanced for the Co-added amorphous catalyst.
