The research and studies so far made on Mary as depicted in Akutagawa\u27s \u22Saihonohito\u22 (The Westerner) have explored, in general, the relationship between the Holy Spirit and Mary. The aim of my study is to explain Akutagawa\u27s descriptions of and expressions concerning Mary through commentaries on the Bible. Mary in the Bible is a woman devoted and faithful to God, and a mother who loves her son as well. But Mary in Akutagawa\u27s understanding is a symbol of commonness.
