LAZOS DE SANGRE, SERIE DE RETRATOS DE ACUARELA

[IN] The Project I’m about to expose in the next pages comes from very deep and personal thoughts: what kind of conection we can find between the physical appearence of a person and the bonds this person has whith his/hers relatives, speaking in terms of biology and genetics. Although these questions seem too have obvious answers in the field of biology, it is not so obvious from an artistic point of view, represented by individual and group portraits. Parting from this perspective I try to find the correct way to clarify those questions I talked about before. It is, for me, inevitable to ask myself -as an artist who tries to capture the personality of a model- some subjects such as the splitting of the identity in two: the “individual identity” and the “collective identity”. To achieve this I’ve made a total of ten portraits which work as a visual synecdoche that might as well be seen as collective portraits. Then every portrait 3 can be seen as both collective and individual portraits. In practice, portraits are subtle, realistic and as resumed as I consider, to send a clear gaze to the public and create a clean and understandable dialogue between the model and the viewer. All portraits are painted on thick watercolor sheets of paper and I apply several layers of watercolor on it to capture what it’s needed to make the pieces more understandable, together or separately[ES] El proyecto que presento en las siguientes páginas nace de una reflexión y unas incógnitas muy personales : que relación existe entre la apariencia física del individuo y los vínculos de este individuo con sus familiares biológicos, hablando en términos de genética. Aunque la reflexión parece tener una respuesta obvia, precisamente desde el punto de vista de la genética, no la tiene desde el planteamiento artístico del retrato individual y colectivo. Desde este planteamiento surge el esclarecimiento de algunas de estas incógnitas personales a que hago referencia. Es para mí inevitable plantearme como artista que pretende plasmar la personalidad de uno o varios modelos, ciertos subtemas como el desdoblamiento de la identidad entre “identidad propia” e “identidad del colectivo familiar” y el peso de esta entidad familiar como colectivo. Para ello he llevado a cabo una serie de retratos individuales, que pretendo que funcionen a modo de sinécdoque visual y que pueden ser leídos, a la vez, como retratos colectivos. Este es por tanto el resumen visual y plástico (y a la vez teórico) de este trabajo: el retrato de cada individuo funciona a la vez como un retrato de familia. Físicamente, los retratos son sutiles, realistas y todo lo sintéticos que considero, como artista, que deberían ser para enviar una mirada clara hacia el espectador y que el diálogo sea entendible y limpio. El soporte elegido es el papel de acuarela blanco y la técnica, la acuarela, tratando de plasmar lo necesario para el mayor entendimiento de las obras, tanto juntas como por separado.Luzzy Galán, G.
