[EN] Due to their economic importance, citrus crops require genetic improvement programmes. Traditional improvement techniques involve a number of limitations, such as sexual incompatibility, apomixis and masculine and femenine sterility. Such limitations of traditional improvement programmes can be approached and overcome through somatic hybridization, a biotechnological tool based on the isolation and subsequent fusion of two non-sexual (somatic) cells without cell walls (protoplasts). By means of this technique it is possible to regenerate cybrids, that is, plants that combine the nuclear genome from one parental and the mitochondrial and/or chloroplastic genome from the other parental.
