This was a two-stage cross-sectional study that assessed metabolic syndrome and associated factors among prepubertal schoolchildren. in the first stage, nutritional status, blood pressure, personal (low birth weight) and family antecedents for cardiovascular disease (CVD) were collected. in the second stage, schoolchildren with at least one of these criteria participated: obesity, personal or family history. Metabolic syndrome (MS) was defined by ATP III and WHO definitions.
