Skeletal muscle fibers are multinucleated cells and each myonucleus controls gene expression in a defined cytoplasmic region, the nuclear domain (ND). Generally, muscle atrophy occurs with increased proteolysis by expression of specific ubiquitin ligases, such as atrogin-1, thus leading to loss of cytoplasm and ND remodeling. The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is also remodeled by reduced functional load in the atrophied fiber.
