Purpose: To assess the impact of HIV-1 mother-to-child transmission antiretroviral prophylaxis cessation after delivery on CD4+ cells and HIV-1 viral load dynamics in HIV-1 infected women. Methods: The study subjects came from a retrolactive cohort of HIV-1 infected pregnant women that received medical care at the NUPAIG – Hospital São Paulo between 2000 and 2005. The ones who had CD4+ cell count over 300 cells/mm³; received prophylaxis with high-activity antiretroviral therapy (HAART); stopped antiretroviral within four weeks after delivery; and had laboratorial assessments before, during and after prophylaxis have been included in the analysis.
