Hearing from 6 to 18 years, fitted with hearing aids and enrolled in school-polo in the State of Alagoas in 2008: a population study

Objective: To survey and characterize the hearing six to 18 years, fitted with hearing aids and enrolled in school- polo of Alagoas in 2008. Method: The study population consisted of 150 students with hearing loss and hearing aids that have responded, as well as those responsible for research instrument. The instrument of data collection were a structural interview, based on Costa and Chiari (2006) which provides information on medical history and school of hearing impaired, which was completed by the parent and a student self –assessment questionnaire to Boscolo (2006) – which investigates the use of hearing aids or not and in what situation (home, school, and social) He uses and hear with hearing aid, which was answered by the student. Statistical Method: The presentation of the results was by means of frequency tables and percentages , bar charts and tables with descriptive statistics. Results: the results revealed that the average age of the students was 11; Five years, whereas 58,7% of students make use of hearing aids: rubella as a probable etiology and the most frequent type and degree of hearing loss, which affected most participants was the profund sensorineural. Regarding the use of hearing aids and socio-cultural characteristics it was found that most students who use the hearing aids are those: whose parents reported more years of schooling, who did not complain about the cast and /or hearing aids, she has completed three or more replacements of hearing aids and doing therapy speech. Students also reported using more and hear with hearing aids at home and in socio- situations. Conclusion: Fifty –eight percent of hearing impaired children between 6 to 18 years enrolled in school-polo in Alagoas are users of hearing aids: rubella is the probable etiology of hearing loss more common in the state, 80% 0f hearing impaired are in speech therapy, 72,7% communicate through gestures, 60% used more and hear with hearing aids at home and in socio situations. There is moderate agreement between the account of parents and students regarding the use of hearing aids.Objetivo: Realizar o levantamento e caracterizar os deficientes auditivos de seis a 18 anos, que receberam próteses auditivas, matriculados nas escolas-polo de Alagoas no ano de 2008. Método: A população foi composta por 150 estudantes com perda auditiva, que possuiam aparelho de amplificação sonora individual – AASI, e que responderam, assim como os seus responsáveis, aos instrumentos da pesquisa. Os instrumentos para coleta dos dados foram: um roteiro de entrevista, baseado em Costa e Chiari (2006), apresentando informações sobre a história clínica e escolar do deficiente auditivo, o qual foi preenchido pelos pais do estudante, e o questionário de auto-avaliação de Boscolo et al. (2006) – que investiga o uso ou não do AASI e em que situação (casa, escola e social) ele usa e ouve com o AASI, o qual foi respondido pelo estudante. Método Estatístico: A apresentação dos resultados foi por meio de tabelas de freqüência e porcentagens, gráficos de barras e tabelas com valores de estatística descritiva. Resultados: Os resultados revelaram que a idade média dos estudantes foi 11;5 anos; que 58,7% dos estudantes faziam uso do AASI; a rubéola como provável etiologia mais freqüente e o tipo e o grau da perda auditiva que acometeu mais os participantes foi a neurossensorial profunda. Quanto ao uso do AASI e as características sócioculturais verificou-se que os estudantes que mais utilizavam os AASIs foram aqueles cujos pais relataram maior tempo de escolaridade, que não apresentaram queixas em relação ao molde e/ou ao AASI, que já realizaram três ou mais reposições da prótese auditiva e que fazem terapia fonoaudiológica. Os estudantes relataram ainda que usam e ouvem mais com o AASI em casa e em situações sociais. 16 Conclusões: Cinqüenta e oito por cento dos deficientes auditivos com idade entre seis e 18 anos matriculados nas escolas-polo de Alagoas são usuários de AASI; a rubéola é a provável etiologia para perda de audição mais freqüente no estado; 80% dos deficientes auditivos estão em terapia fonoaudiológica; 72,7% comunicam-se por meio dos gestos, 60% usam e ouvem mais com o AASI em casa e em situações sociais.
