In the Richmond, Virginia area, the district boundary lines separating Richmond city schools from Henrico and Chesterfield County schools are linked to stark patterns of urban racial and socioeconomic segregation. Mapping these three Richmond area systems over time shows a distinct, if slowly evolving, pattern of segregated minority schools in the city school division cut off from predominantly white schools in the surrounding suburban divisions. Contemporary school segregation in the area is informed by the past failure to consolidate the city and suburban school divisions.
