As members of multidisciplinary teams researching falls, social connections and cognitive health among the elderly within the national Irish Technology Research for Independent Living project (TRIL, www.trilcentre. org), we have been collecting life histories and reflections on changes in society among a cohort of 600 Irish adults aged 60 and over. Although the goal of our research is to explore the role of technology as a support to older adults who want to remain independent at home, the research has also generated fresh understanding and perspectives on experiences of aging in contemporary Ireland
